2011 Australian Kodály Journal - now online

We are pleased to announce that the 2011 Australian Kodály Journal is now available for download. It has a selection of informative reading from both Australian and international educators.  In particular, this edition celebrates 35 years of the International Kodály Society. Download here

Australian Kodály Certificate

The Australian Kodály Certificate is a unique course of professional development designed to equip studio and classroom music teachers with the skills and resources they need to deliver a sequential aural-based music curriculum that will engage students and achieve outstanding results.

This is the only fully accredited and nationally recognised program of teacher training in the Kodály concept. This award has been in existence for some 20 years and during this time many teachers both nationally and internationally have successfully completed the requirements.

The Curriculum

The curriculum for this award has been modelled on outstanding international Kodaly programmes and adapted to suit the needs of Australian educators. It is comprehensive, rigorous and involves a mixture of both hands-on (practical) and lecture style instruction. Peer education is an important part of the training and the course is delivered by experienced and accredited presenters who are working teachers and knowledgeable in their field. The curriculum for the course sets out a minimum of 180 hours of study in the following areas:

Musicianship Musicianship is the study of sight-singing, score reading, aural perception, dictation and analysis using the tools of the Kodály approach (solfa, rhythm syllables and Curwen hand signs)

MethodologyMethodology involves the application of Kodaly’s principles to the development of classroom teaching programmes that are suitable for Australian children.  It includes the study of: Curriculum development, Teaching techniques, Sequencing learning, Lesson planning and assessment. Candidates must specialise in one of three streams:  Early Childhood, Primary or Secondary.

Teaching TechniquesTeaching techniques is the practical application of teaching strategies covered in Methodology.

MaterialsCultural materials involves learning, collecting and analysing the folk music of Australia and other nations to determine its suitability for pedagogical processes outlined in methodology and its ability to support a developmental music programme.

Choral and Ensemble TechniquesThe study of choral conducting, rehearsal strategies and voice production

How to qualify

Educators qualify for this award by completing modules from the national curriculum with an approved course provider. Educators may apply for the certificate by obtaining an application form from the National Secretary. Applications will be considered at the next meeting of the National Council and the applicant will be informed in writing.

Application for the Australian Kodaly Certificate

Further Recognition of this Award

Candidates who successfully complete the Australian Kodaly Certificate with an achievement of Level 6 in Musicianship and Level 5 in Conducting will receive 12 credit points (three months equivalent full-time study) into UNE’s Master of Education (Honours) or 24 credit points (six months equivalent full-time study) into UNE’s Master of Education – Undesignated. Candidates who have successfully completed and are awarded the Australian Kodaly Certificate will be granted a maximum of 24 credit points (six months equivalent full-time study) into UNE’s Master of Teaching (Secondary).

The International Kodály Institute / The Liszt Academy

An Agreement exists with The International Kodály Institute under the auspices of the Liszt Academy that provides credit arrangements for candidates who have successfully completed the Australia Kodály Certificate through Sound Thinking Australia/ Cuskelly College of Music.

Candidates who have successfully completed all three levels of training within one of the teaching specialisations and are awarded the Australian Kodaly Certificate with an achievement of Level 6 in Musicianship and Level 5 in Conducting will be granted credit towards suitable Post Graduate and Masters degree courses at the International Kodály Institute in Kecskemét, Hungary.
